The second edition included a reply to opinions expressed by the French geologist Monsieur Cuvier. Buckland was the first Reader of Geology at Oxford and later became Dean of Westminster.He was a proponent of the catastrophic geological approach to the problem of early man and tried to reconcile the evidence of fossils and geological deposits with the biblical chronology of Archbishop Ussher.
