BAR Intl Ser 1083 2002 1841714623 / 9781841714622 Paperback Very Good
xiv + 203pp, inc. figs + CD, laminated card, A4 ex lib with numerous stamps including one on the page edges, card cover slightly marked, bookplate inside front cover The University College London Lahun (Middle Kingdom) papyri constitute one of the most remarkable harvests of papyri of any age. This volume communicates the content of the surviving letters and letter fragments from the Petrie excavations at Lahun in an accessible and affordable format. The letters and fragments are from original letters: model letters, letter copies, and reports are reserved for future publications. The volume is intended not only for Egyptological researchers, but also for learners in higher and further education. This mass of writing calls for a more nuanced appreciation of the roles of writing and reading, and the social reach of the written culture across the different classes, ages, genders inhabiting this architecture and landscape. (The reader will find three means of access to the original content: Printed pages with transcriptions, transliterations, and translations; A printed index; The entire collection of papyri on an accompanying CD.) 57268

BAR Intl Ser 2179 2010 1407307290 / 9781407307299 Paperback Very Good
vi + 119pp, inc. 45 figs, 12 tables, laminated card, A4 minor shelf wear This study takes a linguistic approach to Ancient Egyptian funerary ritual, focusing on the definition of the word h3i and its performance. Whilst h3i has the connotation of "ritually transport" with the express purpose of revivifying or rejuvenating the deceased, it has been translated as emotionally connected both to rejoicing and mourning. Diamond explores the mythological and ritual contexts of the term, drawing together all the available sources, and tracing developments from Old to New Kingdoms. 59068

xxii + 285pp, inc. 3 tables, 14 figs, 9 coloured plates, card, 8vo Although co-regencies have been acknowledged in Egyptian history, it has been difficult to pinpoint evidence in support of them and little work has been carried out on the Middle Kingdom rulers. Here, Giles examines fragmentary sources for the political history of the late 18th Dynasty and particularly for the co-regency of Amenhotep and his son Akhenaten, and of Akhenaten and his son-in-law Smenkhkare. Giles puts forward a case in support of these two co-regencies by looking at royal burials and espeically Tomb 55 in the Valley of the Kings, art, religious and political history for the 14th century BC. 54990

Golden House Publications 2013 1906137323 / 9781906137328 Paperback Very Good
130pp, inc. 17 tables, 18 figs, card, A4 card cover slightly marked This study investigates the grave assemblages of the non-elite during the New Kingdom, using several different burial sites. Based on the author's database of over 3,000 artefacts, the statistical results will indicate if there was any noticeable shift in funerary practices from the early Eighteenth Dynasty to the end of the Nineteenth Dynasty, from an emphasis on replicating an earthly life after death by including practical, daily-life articles , to a more religious attitude, which necessitated the inclusion of a greater number of religious artefacts. Interpretation of the results may give some insight into the sociological and religious framework of the time, and if and why it changed. 60504
