Sheet map. Hand coloured. Dissected and laid on linen as issued, 66 x 83cm, (26 x 34.5 inches). Green marbled card covers and original green marbled card slipcase with map details on label on the front. Scarce, particularly with the slipcase. The map is remarkably undamaged, with no tears or lacunae and only minimal marking with no loss of detail. The card covers are worn and chipped at the edges and the slipcase is worn at all edges with chips and abrasions. One long seam of the slipcase has come unglued. The map is at a scale of approximately 4 inches to the Mile. The long title seeks to emphasise the accuracy of the map, stating: 'It is founded on the Trigonometric Operations of the late General Roy, combined with a new series of 52 Stations on elevated situations, from which the positions of upwards of 450 Steeples, Domes, Turrets, Vanes and other conspicuous objects, within the limits of the plan, have been determined by means of more than 5000 angles.' The date of 1827 is just before the advent of the railways and was in a period of rapid growth in London, with population rising from 1.4m in 1815 to over 3m in 1860. Consequently the map is a fascinating snapshot of development at this time.
