Book Condition: Good

Decorative half title, title page, dedication to William Cunnington, 5pp preface + 254pp + indices, 34pls + 41 plans & maps, inc. frontispiece, as called for. Half calf, marbled boards and endpapers, bookplate of Crewe Hall, teg, elephant folio. This is the large paper edition, weighing almost 26lbs (12kgs). The covers are consequently damaged, with the front cover detached and the back cover loose. The binding is sound. Frontispiece portrait of William Cunnington slightly foxed, slight foxing to a few page and plate margins. Volume 1 was printed and delivered in three parts, with three plates arriving at the binders later than the rest. This copy has one of the three - 'West view of Stonehenge', bound in at p129, instead of p153 as called for. In the 'Order of the Plates' this item is titled 'A perspective of Stonehenge' but it is the plate required, as a comparison with another copy confirms. This volume lacks the introductory 'Map of Antiquities in the District of South Wiltshire', which is not called for in the 'Order of the Plates' but is present in other copies. A photograph of the missing map is included with this volume. The first Volume of Ancient Wiltshire containing descriptions of Colt Hoare's excavations in the vicinity of Stonehenge and his examination of earthworks and tumuli.
